How to Prepare for Your First Laser Hair Removal Session

Preparing properly for your laser hair removal session makes a significant difference in both safety and results. Here's exactly what to do.

6 Weeks Before

Stop Waxing and Plucking

Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in the hair follicle. Waxing and plucking remove the root entirely — leaving nothing for the laser to target. Switch to shaving only at least 6 weeks before your first session.

Avoid Tanning

Tanned skin increases the risk of burns and pigmentation changes. Stay out of tanning beds and limit sun exposure for at least 6 weeks before treatment. If you've been in the sun, tell your technician before they begin.

24–48 Hours Before

Shave the Treatment Area

Shave the area being treated 24 hours before your appointment. This allows the laser to target the follicle below the skin rather than the hair above it, reducing surface heat and improving results.

Skip Certain Products

Avoid applying the following to the treatment area:

  • Exfoliating acids (AHA/BHA)
  • Perfumes or deodorant (for underarm treatments)
  • Self-tanner or bronzer

    Well-hydrated skin responds better to laser treatments. Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment.

    Day Of Your Appointment

  • Arrive with clean, product-free skin in the treatment area
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing — tight clothing can irritate freshly treated skin
  • Skip caffeine if you're sensitive — it can increase skin sensitivity
  • Ask questions — a good technician will explain the process, test a small patch, and adjust settings for your skin tone
  • What to Expect During the Session

    Your technician will give you protective eyewear. They'll apply a cooling gel and move the laser handpiece across the treatment area. You'll feel a series of quick pulses — often described as a snapping rubber band. Sessions range from 5 minutes (upper lip) to 60+ minutes (full legs).

    Immediately After

  • Expect mild redness and swelling — this usually fades within a few hours
  • Apply aloe vera or a gentle moisturizer to soothe the area
  • Avoid hot showers, saunas, and intense exercise for 24 hours
